A Japanese literature classic that claims God’s tears Stage Play <The Ballad of Narayama>

ONZ Production will be collaborating with renowned Japanese theatrical troupe “Theatre Moments”, bringing into Malaysia a stage play adapted from a classic Japanese novel & The Ballad of Narayama. The play will be staged at Kepong Facthree Event Arts Space from 8th to 12th of November 2017.

The Ballad of Narayama is a novel written by Shichiro Fukazawa in 1956. It was adapted and made into 2 films. The film by the same name directed by Shohei Imamura in 1983 was awarded the Palme d’Or in Cannes Film Festival in the same year.

The story revolves around a family living in a village, where the village custom says that when a person reaches the age of 70, they are to be taken to die at Narayama, a secret and mystical place in the mountains. But due to poverty and famine, nobody finds the custom wrongful but accepted it as a part of their life. By the end of the story, when the mother was sent up to the mountains on her son’s back, the snow fell. The Ballad of Narayama is a Japanese classic. It shows the way Japanese look at life and how it affects the relationship between family members. To others, the story might seem surreal, but it is the conflicts between tradition and humanity that makes the story so beautiful.

Theatre Moments will be taking the opportunity to present the heart-wrenching story to Malaysian audience. Japan is a very modern country which is still, at times, taunted by violence and blood-spill incidents. Behinds these tragedies is the dark secrets the society has been hiding from people’s sight. The Ballad of Narayama, a story being told from generation to generation for half a century, now performed by native Japanese in their mother tongue, is bound to be a dramatic journey one can hardly forget. It is also a golden opportunity for audience to learn more about a different aspect of Japanese culture that is seldom told. Subtitles are provided in both Chinese and English.

The play was awarded the highest mention, most popular and best overall performance awards at the 4 th Sengawa Theatre Competition.

A short briefing and Q&A session with the director and actors before and after the performance respectively, hence audience can grab a chance to know more about Japanese performing arts and literature.
