By the Light of the MOON

The Temple of Fine Arts Kuala Lumpur [TFA KL] is proud to present “By the Light of the MOON” by Chitra Poornima Satish on vocals, Shridhar Gopalaraman on flute, Jyotsna Nithyanandan Prakash on piano, Pangasaasanii Gowrisan on violin, Eliezer Enan on guitar and Prakash Kandasamy on tabla.

Poornima is a disciple of Academy Award nominated, Carnatic music vocalist and composer, Bombay Jayashri. She started learning Carnatic music at The Temple of Fine Arts Singapore and has performed at Chennai’s most prestigious institutions such as Barathiya Vidhya Bhavan, The Mylapore Fine Arts Club, Sri Krishna Gana Sabha and Kartik Fine Arts. She has also done solo concerts and accompanied her guru, Bombay Jayashri at various venues around the world. In October 2012, she was awarded the ‘Musiri Subramania Iyer Award’ for her performance at Sri Krishna Gana Sabha’s 57th Gokulashtami Sangeetha Utsavam and the B-grade from All India Radio, Chennai.

Shridhar is the great-grandson of Sangeetha Kalanidhi Sri P Swaminatha Iyer, a violin maestro of his time. Sridhar graduated with a Masters of Arts in Music and is a B high grade artist at All India Radio. Sridhar has done several solo concerts and has also accompanied dance performances and live orchestras at various venues in India and South East Asia. He has received many awards, including the Aryabhatta award for his service and contribution towards flute music. He is presently a flute music teacher at The Temple of Fine Arts Singapore.

Jyotsna is a composer, performer and a teacher at TFA KL. She has completed her Masters in Performing Arts and has previously been commissioned to compose for the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra [MPO] and the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra [MPYO]. A recipient of multiple BOH Cameronian Arts Awards, she has in the past directed and performed in multiple stages both local and internationally. She also co-composed for “Mahsuri“, a production commissioned by Istana Budaya in 2003 and has presented four of her original works at Lincoln Centre New York in 2004.

Pangasaasanii became the third to stage her violin arangetram in Malaysia in 2002. She has played for many functions at temples, cultural societies, radio programs, orchestras and has been invited to judge many music and singing competitions. She has also collaborated with various local and foreign artists for stage concerts and local albums. In 2017, she was a part of the Sounds of Isha ensemble, performing for Sadhguru, and was later privileged to perform in the presence of two-time Academy and Grammy Award winner, A.R. Rahman. Pangasaasanii currently teaches violin at Swara Community Arts Centre and at TFA KL.

Eliezer is a well-known professional musician in the local music industry. He pursued his music degree at Akademi Seni Budaya dan Warisan Kebangsaan [ASWARA], majoring in music composition and arrangement. Eliezer has been involved in music since childhood in school and churches, where he developed a love for his favourite instrument, the guitar. He has vast experience of being a session musician, composer, arranger and a teacher in the music field. He has also taught on the subject of Music Appreciation at UNITAR. Eliezer is currently a guitar teacher at TFA KL.

Prakash was conferred the title ‘Tokoh Seni Negeri’ by the state government of Penang, in recognition of his contribution to the arts in the state in 2003. He is also the recipient of other prestigious awards from Malaysia and around the world such as ‘Siva Gopal Award for Excellence in Arts’ in 1990, ‘Best of Indradhanu’ in 1998 from India, 7 ‘Boh Cameronian Arts Awards’ in 2006 and 2008, 4 gold medals at the ‘World Championship of Performing Arts’ in Los Angeles, ‘Anugerah Seni Negara’ by the Ministry of Culture Arts and Heritage, Malaysia in 2006, the ‘Datin Seri Endon Mahmood Award for Performing Arts Excellence’ in 2009 and many more. His consistently brilliant and exciting performances and compositions have gained him fame and he has been acknowledged as one of Malaysia’s greatest tabla players. He is presently a tabla teacher at TFA KL and ASWARA.

These highly accomplished music virtuosos have now come together for a youthful contemporary take on well-loved Carnatic standards. Catch them live:
