Knowledge and Social Memory of Modern Architecture

This one-day symposium organised by ILHAM Gallery brings together a multidisciplinary group of scholars from across the region to examine modern architecture and its relationship to the city. The morning session explores the relationship between monuments and power, and the commissioning of monuments as an attempt to shape new social memory for the modern nation-state.
In the afternoon session, we bring into conversation two different disciplinary approaches in the study of the modern architecture – architecture history and curatorial research – to assess the question of how modernism can be translated across cultural contexts as well as how modern architecture can exist in a museum and be communicated effectively through an exhibition.
Speakers include Thanavi Chotpradit (Silpakorn University, Bangkok), Roger Nelson (NTU, Singapore), Chang Jiat Hwee (NUS, Singapore) and Shirley Surya (M+, Hong Kong).

SIMPOSIUM Seni Bina Moden: Kota Pengetahuan dan Memori Sosial Seni Bina Moden

Simposium selama satu hari ini akan membawakan bersama cendekiawan-cendekiawan multidisiplin serantau meneliti seni bina moden dan hubungannya terhadap kota. Sesi pagi akan meneroka hubungan antara monumen dan kuasa, dan komisyen penghasilan monumen sebagai percubaan membentuk memori sosial dalam pembangunan negara bangsa. Sesi tengah hari pula, kita akan membicarakan tentang pendekatan disiplin yang berbeza dalam kajian seni bina moden – sejarah seni bina dan kajian kuratorial – sebagai akses persoalan bagaimana modernisme dapat diterjemahkan ke seluruh konteks budaya dan juga bagaimana seni bina moden hidup di dalam muzium dan mampu dibicarakan dengan effektif melalui pameran.
Pembicara terdiri dari Thanavi Chotpradit (Silpakorn University, bangkok), Roger Nelson (NTU, Singapore), Chang Jiat Hwee (NUS, Singapore) dan Shirley Surya (M+, Hong Kong).
