Two people meet in a clearing in the rainforest. One reeks of danger, the other reeks of the beast of burden. One speaks of sacrifice and martyrdom, the other speaks of glory and conquest. Yet, strangely, they laugh as if they had known each other for eons. Their stories a weave of the cosmos, the cry of childbirth, and the tragedy of human existence. In the darkness of the forest, there lurks worse than monsters.
Inspired by some of the folk tales from around the Malay Archipelago, Son of the Forest stars Naveen Raja and Deena Dakshini, with Engku Armand as supporting cast. Their performance will be supported by Tarrant’s lighting and sound design. This show is a part of Theatre Takeover: Cosmic ’24, organised by Amberjade Arts.
SON OF THE FOREST casts a fresh eye on the nature of some of our favourite or obscure stories, asking why do these stories exist, and why should they continue to exist? This piece attempts in exploring the nature of the female and male role in traditional narratives, and how that also continues into modern day stories. Within each fractured storyline, is a glimmer of hope, despair, and tragedy, lessons sometimes evergreen, sometimes far too old. We explore old tropes and lay them bare, we expose the absurdity of the past, and the cyclic tragedies of our present. There are no sacred cows here, as they have all been led to be judged by the tiger.
