No microphones. No speakers. No cables. No extensions. Malam Sayu Berpuisi is raw and wild just like the night.
Held outdoors in the nights under a banyan tree at The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre, you will find poets accompanied with live improvised music by Feel Tu Penting.
No, the poets will not be reading from a piece of paper or from their phones. They will be performing the poems. Entry is free, but there’ll be a beggar going around seeking contributions to support the artistes.
Please bring your own raincoat or umbrella in case it rains. For those who don’t, a giant banana leaf will be provided.
Adriana Manan
Adriana is a playwright-in-progress, writer, researcher, and storyteller. Born, raised, and based in KL, she finds the creative tension of living in Malaysia a rich source of artistic inspiration. She hopes to always remain curious.
Melizarani T. Selva
Melizarani T. Selva is a spoken word poet, showrunner and educator based in Kuala Lumpur. To date, she has performed in six countries and represented Malaysia at the prestigious Commonwealth People’s Forum in London and the ZEE Jaipur Literature Festival. Her notable performances include, TEDxGateway in Mumbai and Ubud Writers and Readers Festival. Her first book titled ‘Taboo’ made Top 10 Best-Seller List on Malaysia’s No.1 Online Bookstore (MPH). To date, her poems have been translated in French by Éditions Jentayu and in Bahasa Malaysia by Malaysia’s National Institute of Language and Literature. Presently, she runs Kuala Lumpur’s monthly poetry open mic, ’If Walls Could Talk’, a bilingual poetry slam,‘Slamokrasi’ and teaches performance poetry at international and national schools.
Nana
Under the pen name Nabila Najwa, Nana’s original poems and short stories have been published both on international (USA and Indonesia) and local platforms. They often write and perform in Bahasa Malaysia, Bahasa Indonesia, and English. With an avid interest in education through poetry and arts, Nana has also been teaching in Malaysia and even Brunei. They also have self-published zines of their own writing and artwork, and that of others.
Nana was one of the director’s for Ridhwan Saidi’s Teater Modular and has received very positive reviews for their writing and performance for The Human Exhibit: Mentalhealth.
Arief Hamizan & Ali Alasri
After watching a life-changing episode of Ellen, a former pharmacist turned street magician (Ali Alasri) sets out on a quest to achieve immortality in the Tibetan mountains. He recruits his one-time nemesis for the journey, a trainee sandwich artist with a knack for letter-writing (Arief Hamizan). Together, they battle demons, hidden travel fees, and race-based politics, as they struggle to plan their itinerary – discovering the importance of friendship, failure, and true love atop the peaks of the Himalayas.
