Tafsir Semula translates to Reinterpretation.
For the case of this exhibition initially we are looking at reinterpretation on heritage and culture, but not limiting to conventional aspects of them. Artists from Titikmerah Collective are mainly painters / visual artists and we constantly put layers of concept and ideas behind our works. Be it in abstract (Ajim Juxta, Aleff Ahmad) and surreal (Ellis Khan, Adeputra Masri), the idea is always about pushing the limits in context of our understanding of themes given to us.
We are playing with the idea where heritage and culture are constantly changing and evolving via art making. Reinterpretation of our appreciation of myths, pantun and cultural imagery are ways to go in order to celebrate them. Exploration of techniques are also an aspect we are looking at to convey the idea of reinterpretation for the invited artists: Hakym Hilmy, Zahran and Afi Sulaiman, be it in analog and digital means.
At the end of the day a general thematic group show like this is always about artists learning from each other and to celebrate their works together.
