RICE! Immersive Edible Theatre At Home

“My life is shaped by a series of experiences at the dinner table.”

1990s, Kuala Lumpur: Connie Cheng is a modern Malaysian born Chinese woman, torn between the traditional values of her grandmother and her glamorous life as a late-night lounge singer. 2021, London: Now a first generation British Chinese Malaysian, Connie realizes she’s lived longer in the UK than she ever did in Malaysia.

Rice! is a story of migration, the delicate existence of life between two cultures and the food that shapes it. How do you hold onto the past while looking towards the future?

Join us for an immersive, edible journey from London to Kuala Lumpur via your own kitchen. With a package of simple ingredients and dishes delivered straight to your door, our chef partners will show you how to prepare some of the food that defines Connie. Fill your home with the scent of Chinese five spice and get a taste Connie’s life through a delicious blend of storytelling, food and song.

Rice! is a unique culinary theatre experience cooked up by Wayang Kitchen, a new company based in Malaysia which fuses food and performance founded by Razif Hashim and Hester Welch, written by Vera Chok (#1 Amazon bestseller The Good Immigrant) and brought to (virtual) life in partnership with Omnibus Theatre.

This dynamic production will be performed live from both Malaysia and the UK and food delivered to your home with thanks to our food partners Concubine KL and 5 Foot Way.

Age recommendation: 14+ (some strong language and sexual references)

Show duration: 1 hour (+1hr virtual cooking class if you select a Food Kit ticket)

Rice! is supported by the British Council Digital Collaboration Fund, which supports UK and overseas cultural partnerships to develop digitally innovative ways of collaborating.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

There are two ticket options for audiences in Malaysia:
1. RM28 Performance only
2. RM88 Performance PLUS “The Concubine Experience” (self-pickup) or RM 98 (including delivery within Klang Valley). This includes access to 1-hour pre-show virtual cooking class.

As part of the experience audiences will have the option to taste some of the food that defined Connie, during the show. In Kuala Lumpur, audiences have the option to indulge into “The Concubine Experience” which is a combination of ingredients to prepare, as well as ready made delights expertly prepared by the team at Concubine KL, which can be picked up or delivered straight to their door. Audiences will need to attend a 1-hour pre-show virtual cooking class to create the sensory experience in their home.

The performance will take place on Zoom, a link and any further access details will be sent to the email address you used to book one day ahead of the event.
