Brought to Melaka for the very first time, this latest installment of VerSeS’ Renaissance & Baroque Gems series entitled Bach & Charpentier will be featuring the celebrated KL Madrigal Singers and Players. Presenting sacred music by two composers who varied greatly in style, wider perspectives of Baroque music will be offered. The venue of the concert – iconic Christ Church – provides the best setting in which to enjoy choral music as it was intended. The music
Actus Tragicus (BWV 106) is one of Bach’s earliest cantatas, composed at the age of 22. Despite the young age, his ingenuity and detailed musical writing shines bright, in addition to his effective and economic use of musicians (a small vocal ensemble supported by a modest instrumental ensemble). The aria “Schafe können sicher weiden” from his Hunting Cantata BWV 208, has been an evergreen crowd favorite for its pleasing tune. M.A. Charpentier’s Messe de minuit pour Noël (H. 9), provides great contrast to J.S. Bach’s music. Selections from this work include lively movements that have incorporated traditional folk tunes (Noëls).
