Looking Within: Image Without – A Painting Exhibition

The artistic intention Butoh tapped on, in finding common materiality in humanity, is the core spirit that resides with each and every one of us, a fundamental existence. In recent days, this constant pursuit has converged with my search in painting.
In this series of work, I derived inspiration from the unpremeditated form of Butoh to freely create. I respond to what I feel, with no preconceived notions. In the various images of a Butoh dancer, I create based on what I have learned in my Butoh practice.
“To me, dance reflects life. There is no fixed form, not a combination of actions. I improvise as I dance, as I wish, wherein lies the danger.” – Kazuo Ohno.
I love where “danger” lies. It is my favourite way of creating. To venture into the unknown. Is this the most beautiful and enthralling part of art-making?

ABOUT LOH BOK LAI
Loh is a painter and full time Fine Art Lecturer at Dasein Academy of Art Kuala Lumpur since 2000. He participated in experimental theatre performances and later acted in a few local independent films. His main casts were in: Ah Beng Returns (2000); Room To Let (2002); The Beautiful Washing Machine (2004) (Best Asean Feature, FIPRESCI Award, Bangkok International Film Festival 2005); Sanctuary (2004) (Special Mention: Fribourg International Film Festival 2005, New Currents Award: Pusan International Film Festival 2004, Netpac Award & Tiger Award: Rotterdam International Film Festival 2005; Bird House (2005); Thing We Do When We Fall In Love (2006); Waiting For Love (2007); Call If You Need Me (2009) (Silver DV Award: Hong Kong International Film Festival 2009); and Collecter (2012).
His main casts in Short Films were in: The Moment of Love (2005); The Wall (2006); Love Disaster (2008); Yen Sen Can Do (2008); and Everyday Everyday (2009) (Grand Prix in Clermont-Ferrand Short film Festival).
ABOUT 10th KL Butoh Festival
The KL Butoh Festival is celebrating its 10th year and has announced an awesome lineup of performances, exhibitions and master classes. The Festival kicks off with a double bill of butoh performances starring a piece “Earth Child” by two senior Butoh masters Koichi Tamano and Hiroko Tamano, “Wooden Face” by NyobaKan and “The Goddess of Mercy” solo by Lee Swee Keong.
Furthermore, the KL Butoh Festival wants to be identified and connected to the city where it is held. The Butoh Festival is presenting a photography exhibition titled “If life likens a river….” by DevLee and a painting exhibition titled “Looking Within: Image Without” by Loh Bok Lai. Performing and presenting during an exhibition is a whole new experience, within the space, installation and performance.
