THE POETICS COLLECTIVE PRESENTS AN ENCHANTING EVENING OF “BRAHMS AND THE SCHUMANNS”
The Poetics Collective (under the banner of VerSeS Music Ensembles) will be performing the romantic and expressive works of Johannes Brahms, Robert Schumann and Clara Schumann. The concert will take place on the 24th of August at KS Strings, Petaling Jaya starting at 8 pm.
The evening’s program will feature:
- Robert Schumann: Kinderszenen (Scenes from Childhood)
This suite, composed in 1838, reflects Schumann’s idealized view of childhood. Each piece is a whimsical masterpiece that captures a different facet of youthful innocence and wonder. Darrel Chan will perform a selection of 7 out of 13 piano pieces. These delicate and expressive pieces will highlight Schumann’s genius in creating vivid musical imagery that resonates with listeners of all ages.
- Clara Schumann: Three Romances for Violin and Piano, Opus 22
Written in 1853, these pieces are celebrated for their lyrical beauty and emotional intensity. Clara Schumann herself was a formidable composer and pianist and she poured her heart into these compositions, which remain some of the finest examples of romantic chamber music. Eben Ting and Iau Jo Yee will perform these romantic pieces, emphasizing the dialogue between the instruments. Each romance is characterized by its own distinct mood, ranging from passionate and melancholic, to joyful and serene; offering a profound insight into Clara Schumann’s artistic voice and emotional landscape.
- Johannes Brahms: Liebeslieder Waltzes, Opus 52
These are a collection of love songs composed in 1868 that beautifully blend lyrical vocal lines with Brahms signature harmonies. These waltzes, originally written for a vocal quartet with four hands piano, explore themes of love, longing and joy. The Poetics Collective vocalists and pianists will bring these enchanting pieces to life, creating a tapestry of sound that captures the essence of romance and intimacy.
Our program delves into the richness of German Romantic music, featuring both instrumental works and a variety of lieder (songs). These lieder will demonstrate the composers’ skill in setting text to music for solo voice or instrument.
The Poetics Collective are Sharlene Rani, Chew Shi Yun, Asha Menon, Serene Chng, Scott Woo, William Kow, Eben Ting (Guest Violinist), Darrel Chan and Iau Jo Yee.
