A Poulenc masterpiece exploring themes of deception, isolation, depression and suicide in a woman’s telephone conversation with her ex-lover. Putting to music his friend Jean Cocteau’s monodrama, in which the telephone becomes the main character in a sentimental drama, was an extraordinary tour de force for the composer.
