Synopsis : In light of painting's waning prominence, eclipsed by the proliferation of new media practices in the global contemporary art arena, The Painting Show takes a closer look at three mid-career Malaysian painters in their attempt at reinventing and reasserting the importance of the medium in contemporary art discourse.

With his close-up studies of subjects ranging from neon tubes to the Windows landscape, Gan Siong King's works are often tinged with his searing humour in his quest to find the epic in the banal.

For Hamir Soib, painting is an expressive act whereby both the scale of his paintings and the strength of his brushwork magnify social issues that concerns the painter.

On the other hand, Phuan Thai Meng's superbly crafted realist paintings explore between-spaces within an urban environment, honing in to the ordinary as an attentive observer to the awkward relationship between these spaces and its inhabitants.

This mini survey of contemporary Malaysian paintings also hopes to present a figure-less portrait of a place seen through it's objects and spaces, tracing the hubris and debris of the human footprint.

Curated by Yee I-Lann and Valentine Willie.
