| Synopsis : | He was known to those dear to him as 'The Tango King', to others, Doc Ismail; and his trade-mark pipe was always within reach, no matter what the occasion. This 'third man' of Malaysian politics, Tun Dr. Ismail was a true nation builder, committed to bridging the gulf of ethnicity and religion in this country. A love story about one man's love for the people in his life and his country, this presentation uses original writing and musical composition, and incorporates the remarkably beautiful poetry of fellow Johorian and National Laureate Dato’ Usman Awang. Essentially a dramatisation of real events in the history of Malaysia, the musical does not in any way seek to present its material as historical fact. It seeks to, at the very least, remain true to the spirit of Tun Dr Ismail and his time. Written by U-En Ng, with the poetry of Dato' Usman Awang, music by Dato' Johari Salleh, musical direction by Mervyn Peters and choreography by A. Aris Kadir. Directed by Joe Hasham and starring Malik Taufiq, Tunku Alizakri, Tisha Zarina Zainal, Ari Ratos, Lim Soon Heng and Belinda Richardson. |

| A true performance that tries to please everyone, putting in poetry, songs, traditional dances, all in one work - I don't understand how this piece of work could be categorized as a musical. The songs seem to be written in a "popular music" structure which has few parts being repeated over and over again, instead of the musical form that tells that of a story. The characters were speaking in true Brit-ish way - ending with the "eh(s)" and filled with "damn(s)" as adjectives. For a moment I thought I was watching a Brit-ish play!! Although I could understand the British colonization playing a part in influencing the accent (possibly), doesn't it make more sense to have a Malaysian-ised accent instead? Nevertheless, I'd have to give credits to the casts (especially Tish) for their strong vocal and impressive acts - it was just the storyline that seem a little weak, and seemed to squeeze in as much facts found from Wikipedia and the likes. All IMHO...

| Joe has taken the right steps in redeeming himself after the TUNKU garbage last year...But,I wonder if the good stuff is really from ego-centric Joe Hasham...or the people he surrounds himself with.Hhmmmmm.Think about it.

| the acting was brilliant, the music was superb. malik was excellent! and i don't mind at all the brit accent. though, i thought the play was missing some critical or 'kick' elements in its overall storyline. like, it's more fun to read 'the reluctant politician' compared to the play. well, that's just my humble opinion.
