| Synopsis : | The definition of DNA is rendered into a poetic acronym for devote, nostalgia and adore, in Thai artist Imhatai Suwattanasilp's body of work. The 27-year old artist provides a deeply intimate interpretation of two of the most common of all shared human experiences - family and death - by using a combination of photography and mixed media sculptural objects made from hair fallen from her head. Over the course of a few months, Imhatai collected hair follicles as they naturally shed from her scalp, painstakingly crocheting the gathered strands into intricate designs that works as veils as well as cultural signifiers that are relevant her life. Recognised as one of Thailand's emerging names in contemporary art, Imhatai Suwatthanasilp graduated with a BA in Fine Arts from the Sipakorn University in 2004. She was awarded a scholarship to the Ecole National Superieure Des Beaux Arts (ENSBA), Paris, as an exchange student in 2006. Since then she has exhibited in both Bangkok and Paris and won the Silpa Bhirasri Silver Medal Award in the 22nd Exhibition of Contemporary Art by Young Artistsin 2005. Imhatai is currently pursuing her Masters in Fine Arts at Silpakorn University. *Happening at VWFA's Project Room. |
