Hamlet :A Performance Lecture by SD
“To be, or not to be…” If anyone were asked to cite Shakespeare, this line is probably the one that first comes to mind. Taken from the famous play Hamlet-The Prince of Denmark, these words have been quoted, adapted, spoofed and even commercialized (think: 2B or not 2B, that is the pencil). Yet, this 400-year-old play has never stopped to fascinate audience, theater practitioners and scholars with its complex world view and fascinating portrayal of human nature.
In collaboration with The Actors Studio Teater Rakyat and the newly formed KL Shakespeare Players, Shakespeare Demystified now brings this play in the form of performance lecture. What differentiates this from earlier SD shows is this: it will feature the “must-perform scenes” from the play in its original language, each guided not only by narration but also analysis from the actor’s point of view.
For those who are unfamiliar with the play, this is a good introduction to its intriguing plot that involves murder, ghost, madness, deceits, and culminates in a deadly sword duel.
For those who have read or seen the play, this production invites you to look deeper into its context, themes and issues. The main focus will be on the title character, Hamlet: his relation to the supernatural, to the people surrounding him, and to himself.
The ensemble of five is made up of theatre veterans and new comers: Anne James, Lim Soon Heng, Lim Kien Lee, Marina Tan and David H. Lim. They will take turns playing Hamlet in different situations, and share their discovery in tackling the role.
Audience are invited to join the discussion during Q&A session.
