From the personal and intimate, to fantastic and epic, 2008’s plays represent the ideas of a generation of theatre artists reflecting on the problems and possibilities of our times. By plundering our history and legends, tackling urgent issues and musing about what the future might hold, the plays offer new and critical perspectives - about who we are and what it means to be living in Singapore in 2008. This is his first play in more than a decade and is a bitingly comic satire that blends ancient myth with contemporary politics. Directed by Ivan Heng and accompanied with live orchestra by Gamelan Asmaradana, this theatrical epic promises to be dazzling exploration of senselessness of war, religious conservatism and hypocrisy, and the ruinous abuse of power. The Swordfish, the the Concubine was short-listed from 600 entries for reading at the 21st International Playwriting Competition at The Warehouse Theatre, UK, in 2006.
