At A Plank Bridge
Set in the heart of Malaya after the Japanese withdrawal and before the return of the British colonialists to the peninsula, ‘At A Plank Bridge’ deals with conscience, identity and humanity. Produced by The Actors Theatre and directed by Kannan Menon, this one-act play cast TV’s Mono Maniam (Chandran) and Broadway’s Chan Ming Lye (Fook Leong) who meet on a deserted country road, near a plank bridge. From that point, their loyalty and patriotism are tested. The confrontation between the two characters turns into a trial on what it means to be a person in an emerging nation as they both try to test each other’s intentions. In the background of their encounter, lie the events of wartime Malaya: the “Death Railway”, anti-Japanese resistance, communist rebellion and the vigour of the Indian National Army.
Actors Studio Teater Rakyat (Malaysia) and East 101 Theatre Corp's (New York City) as joint-producers, At A Plank Bridge is the first Malaysian play ever to receive a professional production by a New York theatre as part of its regular season.
“...powerful performance, evoking the emotional and physical terror and turbulence of the era. Mano manages to provide a sharp contrast with a surface calm, barely hiding a deep and swift undercurrent” EBridge Malaysia Monthly.
“Ming Lee was memorable as Fook Leong...It was during the play’s more emotional monologues that he truly delighted...” The Star Online.
" . . . the play was a triumph, a masterful examination of themes such as the value of humanity, the power of history and the desperate things that men do in desperate situations." The Star Online.
