I was one of the graduates of the very first acting course conducted by Joe Hasham. After that I was offered his first ever stage role, Cardinal Wolsey in “A Man For All Seasons”, one of the earliest productions ofthe then fledgling The Actors Studio. Since those early days I have gone on to act in television, film as well as the irregular stage production.

 

“Paper Crane” marks my debut on stage in a musical! Although I am required to sing only in the opening number I still find it a daunting task. Especially since I am working among so many young and talented people who sing, dance and act. All at the same time!

It reunites creative teams that, collectively, brought such musicals as BROKEN BRIDGES, TUNKU, ISMAIL, KAKI BLUE, ADAM and MALAYSIAN GIRLS to the Malaysian stage. Set in contemporary Malaysia, PAPER CRANE is a unique blend of East and West.

 

The story

PAPER CRANE chronicles the life of a famous Chinese opera star. As a young man, Ah Kit dreams of joining a Chinese opera troupe. Through an unfortunate turn of events, he manages to draw the wrath of Fui Koh, the current superstar incumbent. He is hired as a lowly stagehand instead and befriends Siu Ngau. Ah Kit falls for the Manager’s pretty daughter, Fei Mui. Friction increases between Ah Kit and Fui Koh, and all things come to a head at a grand performance. Fui Koh is mistakenly given the wrong costume. Outraged and embarrassed, he stomps off. Left with no choice, the Manager gets Ah Kit to replace Fui Koh and he performs brilliantly. Ah Kit becomes the new star of the troupe while an angry and bitter Fui Koh leaves the company. Over time, the business declines and Ah Kit falls heavily into debt. He decides to borrow money one last time and vows to produce the greatest show ever…
