The 2nd Kakiscript Playwriting Competition by Kakiseni

In 2007, we launched the Kakiscript Playwriting Competition, and were inundated by entries from all over the country. Ten winners were selected, and the prize-winning plays were published in a book, 100 Minutes to Change the World.

We’re ready for more.

The 2nd Kakiscript Playwriting Competition, the richest playwriting competition in the country, is back and you have 3 months, or 93 days to create a ten minute play. A great ten-minute play, to be precise.

Read on for more information.

What We Are Looking For

This year, we’re setting a theme : Conflict/Resolution

We are looking for original, sophisticated works, which explore the idea of conflict, or the idea of resolution, or conflict and resolution jointly, or conflict versus resolution. If you have a different interpretation of the theme that we’ve suggested here, go for it!

Just make sure your work is engaging and rooted in the Malaysian experience.

Each play must run for duration of around 10 minutes, plus or minus two minutes. Submissions can be plays written in either English or Malay -- or a combination of both.

Note that we are looking for literature intended for performance; in other words, you should think about your play as theatre on stage as you write.

What We Don’t Want

We’re not looking for didactic or dogmatic plays. You are encouraged to contextualise your play with social and political issues, but don’t assume we want social or political tracts and commentaries. We want quality theatre. If you need to preach, write a sermon -- but don’t send it to us.

Why?

Kakiscript aims to encourage the creation of new, original Malaysian plays. We hope it will be an incentive for existing playwrights to produce work, and also an opportunity to unearth new talent. We also hope to encourage the creative exploration of issues affecting contemporary Malaysia.

We will be publishing the ten winning entries in print, in a single volume; they will also be available for download from Kakiseni.com.

Did We Mention Prizes?

The playwright of the winning entry will receive RM10,000 in cash. Two runners-up will receive RM5,000 each. Seven consolation prize winners will receive RM2,000 each.

How It Works

You have three months from the launch of the competition to work on your play(s). The deadline for submission has now been extended to 30th September 2009, 5pm.

A panel of three judges will read all submissions and score each accordingly. The identity of the plays’ authors will not be disclosed to this panel, in the interest of impartiality.

*The ten top scoring plays will be short-listed, and judges will meet for final deliberations and scoring to decide on which play wins the Grand Prize and which get the remaining nine prizes.

*Winners of the competition will be privately informed in early December 2009. Winners will be publicly disclosed in December 2009, in conjunction with the launching of the print volume.

*if there are any changes to this timeline due to unforeseen circumstances, we’ll inform all the applicants.

...

RULES AND GUIDELINES

Rules On Format and Submission

1. The competition is open to all Malaysians (resident and abroad) and all residents of Malaysia (this means foreigners living in Malaysia may participate) -- with the exception of Kakiseni.com staff, members of the judging panel, and their immediate family members.

2. Your play should last around 10 minutes, plus or minus two minutes. Time your play before sending it to us! As a rule of thumb, it should take approximately between 45 seconds to a minute to read one page; as such, your play should NOT exceed 20 pages.

3. Your play should be written in the following format:

- Printed one-sided on white A4 paper.

- Times New Roman, Size 12, Double line spacing.

- The header of each page should have the title of the play; the foot of each page should be numbered. The cover of the play should be page 1.

- The format for the cover of the play should STRICTLY follow this sample (to download, right-click and select "Save Link As ...")

- The look of the script itself should STRICTLY follow this sample (to download, right-click and select "Save Link As ...")

4. Please ensure that the cover of your submission includes the play title, your real name (anonymous entries will not be judged!), date of birth, telephone number, email address (if available), and mailing address.

5. For the purposes of impartiality, do NOT include your name in any other portion of the play script.

6. You should provide four (4) copies of your submission.

7. You may submit up to three different plays for competition.

8. Send your play to:

The 2nd Kakiscript Playwriting Competition

c/o Kakiseni.com Sdn. Bhd.

AM-2, Mezzanine Floor,

The Istara,

1 Lorong Utara B, Off Jalan Utara,

46200 Petaling Jaya,

Selangor Darul Ehsan.

All entries must reach Kakiseni.com by 5pm, 30th September 2009.

9. Kakiseni.com will not return any plays that have been submitted.

10. If you fail to comply strictly with all the format and submission rules, your play will be automatically rejected from consideration by the judging panel. As such, please read the rules carefully and fully comply with them.

11. Any decision by the panel of judges is final, and will not be subject to any form of appeal.

...

Rules on Content

12. The play must be written in either Bahasa Malaysia or English, or a combination of both. Incidental use of any other languages must be accompanied by a translation in either English or Malay in the script itself.

13. Your characters must be purely fictional. You are personally responsible for ensuring that your play contains no criminal, libellous / defamatory material. The panel of judges reserves the right (in its sole and complete discretion to form an opinion on) to not consider any plays that may contain criminal, libellous / defamatory material.

14. Your play must contain original, never-seen-before material. The play must not have previously been in the public domain in any form (whether in performance, publication in print or on the Internet, or in any other competitions). It must contain no copyrighted material.

Special Terms and Conditions

15. You will retain all rights to the play you submit.

16. However, by entering this competition, you agree not to publish or have your play produced before 31st December 2009, unless agreed to in writing by Kakiseni.com.

17. If your play is selected as one of the ten prize-winners:

- You will be required to participate in promotional and publicity work relating to the competition and Kakiseni.com;

- You hereby consent for the publication of your play in the intended print volume, under the banner of the Kakiscript competition. The prize money from the competition shall be deemed sufficient payment and remuneration for the use of your play for that purpose;

- You will be entitled to have 10 copies of the printed Kakiscript volume, free of charge;

- You further agree to allow Kakiseni.com the right to distribute your play on its website in PDF format, free of charge, enabling its registered users to download the same; and

- You shall grant Kakiseni.com and / or the sponsor of the Kakiscript competition the first right of refusal to produce your play in any capacity, for a period ending 31st December 2011, in any media format -- including theatre stagings; readings for radio and podcasts; and film for cinema, television or Internet release. In the event Kakiseni.com and / or the main title sponsor exercises the right to produce your play, you will be entitled to receive payment or commission in accordance with standard practices. The quantum of payment or commission will be arrived at on the basis of mutual consultation and agreement.

Thanks for taking the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love learning more on this topic. If possible, as you gain expertise, would you mind updating your blog with more information? It is extremely helpful for me.

Sounds good, I have no idea either if the judges are the same. I was actually wondering the same thing myself, but then I realized it doesn't really matter. All you need to do is submit your best work. Surely that is all there is to it. There's really no need to know who the judges are.

If there has been some delay in the judging etc... , at least have the courtesy to announce it on this website.

Everytime I check this page there is more and more spam and not enough information

Established playwrights then, not professional. Hope to see new writers this time!

Thanks for all your comments and questions. A few quick responses and updates:

1. We're giving you more time! The deadline is now 5 pm,30th of September.

2. The formatting guideline is there so we don't get a big fat mess of entries with different formats in each play. We're not going to disqualify someone coz their play missed a double space a couple of times or the margin was the wrong size!

3. Write! Send in! Last year's winners were NOT all professional creative writers.

Any more questions, please email us.

Most of the past winners' scripts are more or less published in the same format with the characters on the left side EXCEPT for one - Jo Kukathas. She didn't even state the names of the characters , just the number of characters. Her play reads more like a poem. So I guess the judges overlooked the STRICT format rules. After all, like I said, all the winners are professinals.

xxl,
I guess what they're trying to say by 'normal formatting' is that they're human (not some kind of computers) and will understand any format as long as it is a playwriting format.

What concerned me was the word 'STRICTLY' in the RULES. Makes me think that if I don't get it right, I'm done for.

posted by xxl, Thu 13.08.200908:24:59 AM
I think the plays are published in a different format from the format that writers are supposed to submit in.

Also I e-mailed one of the organizers about the stage directions format and apparently "normal formatting is fine". Which confuses the heck out of me because I have no idea what is normal formatting.

Hanif,
Thanks for replying. Am I an experienced playwriter? If by 'experienced' you mean PROFESSIONAL, then no, I'm not. But I do have a bit of experience. I used to write plays for my school all the time. And I've written plays for festivals and competitions before.

And I always use this format:

http://www.chameleontheatre.org/newplay/playformatting.html#Examples

What confused me is that the RULES say that I have to STRICTLY follow the format given. But the previous winners didn't. I guess it's okay because they're professional. But I'm not, and I'm afraid I might be disquallified if I get it wrong.

So I really need to get the full picture here.

Sophomore,
Are you an experienced playwriter? The previous format rules are the same except that this time the rules include a theme. I am as confused as you are regarding the strict format that contestants must abide by. If you read the winners' bios, they are ALL PROFESSIONAL playwriters.

I'm still contemplating on the format.

I read the Kakiscript book and some of them totally ignore the STRICT format. Which raises the question: Is the rules and regulations of this year same as the year before?

Someone help.

I already got my script down on paper (handwritten). The typing it down in format is such a problem.

7. You may submit up to three different plays for competition.

xxl and balboa,
Are you two organisers or judges or sponsors? Balboa, you're funny - repeating part of xxl's comment like a parrot!

I like Jo Kukathas' script. Jo didn't write in the format stated in the rule but her script was accepted and she won a consolation prize. Nevertheless, she is a professional - a director, writer and in the acting field.

The Rules and Guidelines says that I should STRICTLY follow the format of the sample of the script given.

But the samples given are just for the front cover and dialogues. What about other things like descriptions of characters and scenes? Or settings and character's movements? Or the change from scene to scene? Etc.

Could someone pleae enlighten me?

I am used to this format of scriptwriting:

http://www.chameleontheatre.org/newplay/playformatting.html#Examples

(copy/paste)

I wonder if it can be used. Because I'm more comfortable using that type of format.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks xxl,
I asked that question because I was thinking of revising my story which was 'shortlisted'(actually it was longisted) last year, to suit the theme . If the same judges were to read it, it would be boring to them.
Oops, sorry, there was a typo in my name.

Dear Soh,

No, I'm not part of the staff. And I have no idea either if the judges are the same. I was actually wondering the same thing myself, but then I realized it doesn't really matter. All you need to do is submit your best work. Surely that is all there is to it. There's really no need to know who the judges are.

Dear xxl,
Are you one of the organisers or staff? May I ask you a question? Will the same judges be judging this year's playwriting competition?

I read the published book and all the winners are experienced and have written plays or connected to acting in the theatres. So where do we newbies stand a chance?

To SM:

On the contrary, I am EXTREMELY shocked that you are unable to accept profanities in a play that is meant to represent the very real, subjective experiences of individuals in a society where such profanities are evidently part of life. Who do you think you are, the Malaysian Censorship Board? As artists in Malaysia, we have constantly faced censorship in our eternal quest to create, to say through fiction what is impossible to say through traditional media, and you are suggesting we censor the only arena that is left for us to freely express our feelings and experiences? I am shocked, stunned, and grief-stricken that there is a comment like this on a site like kakiseni.com, which I always assumed promoted the growth of the arts and creative expression. Is this a reflection of the times we are going through, in which honesty and bluntness is repressed in favor of sweet-smelling lies and beautiful cover-ups of the rotting corpse that is Malaysian society? No, no. If there is no freedom of speech even in fiction, that says a lot about the state of this culture and this country.

If you must know, I thought that the profanity-spouting character had delightfully fresh, deep, layered characterization, and the extreme swearing just added another facet to an interesting, engaging individual. Get off your high horse, my dear. You are of course entitled to your own opinion, but asking the organizers of this competition to censor entries? That, I cannot and will not condone.

I am EXTREMELY SHOCKED to read a past winner's playwriting with all the vulgarities and cuss words. I sincerely hope that kakiscript would not allow vulgarities in the entries as a rule. I can't imagine that piece turning into a play on stage.

I'm not part of the staff, but, the book with all the winning plays of the 1st Kakiscript Playwriting Competition is available for download on the site.

Also, it says that all entries have to be 'rooted in the Malaysian experience'.

Dear KakiSeni team,

need to bug u with 2 questions:

1) do u guys have any samples of past winners? & can i view them?
i'm a newbie at scriptwriting, & i have a few interesting stories that i'd like to turn into stage scripts. :)

plus i'd like to know the standard or quality of the scripts that have garnered your judges' attention in the past.

2) does it HAVe to revolve around M'sian life? as in i can't submit anything that ism't set in a local/M'sian context?

thanks a lot!
